Contact Lens Solution Facts

Many contact lens brands come with a contact lens solution. The effective and safe use of your contact lenses often depends too on how you use these solutions. It also matters what kind of solution you use. Here are some facts that you should know first before you start cleaning your lenses with a solution.

Fact #1: Only some lenses require cleaning

Many lens types need to be cleaned but not all of them do. Some lenses are actually intended for daily wear. These are to be disposed of at the end of the day. Some people may prefer this type of contacts if they are in the habit of losing contacts. Others also find this type more convenient for the simple fact that it does not require cleaning. There are also some contacts that are intended for extended wear and do not require immediate cleaning.

Other types however may have to be periodically removed for cleaning. A solution is typically used to disinfect it. This is necessary because the constant use and exposure of contact lenses may leave it with dirt and bacteria that can irritate or damage the eyes.

Fact #2: Not all solutions are appropriate.

Not every contact lens solution can be used for every contact lens type. Contact lens packages have instructions on what specific solutions can be used. Using an incorrect solution for your lenses could cause microorganisms to multiply and harm your eyes. Examples of solutions that are used for cleaning are hydrogen peroxide, saline and enzyme solutions.

In some cases, your lens product may require a multi purpose solution. This product may be used on a lot of contact lens brands. Not all solutions of this type however may be able to get rid of all possible harmful organisms or elements.

Fact #3: Solution containers and your fingers should be kept clean.

You should be meticulous with cleaning your contact lenses. Before you clean them, you should also make sure that you have washed your hands with water and mild soap. The containers of your lenses should also be periodically cleaned with water and the cleaning solution. When using the cleaning solution, make sure that the contents of the bottle are not left exposed for a long time. It would also be a good idea not to leave solution covers or caps lying around with the inner part exposed or lying on a dirty surface. Your lens cleaning habits is one important factor that can help keep your eyes safe from irritation or infection.

Fact #4: Some solutions may be recalled.

You should pay attention to news about products related to contact lenses. Like every other product, solutions may not always be safe. Sometimes, the danger of using certain solutions only becomes obvious after people have used them extensively. The high rate of infections or eye damage that accompanies solution use may be due to certain chemical ingredients. In this case, the solutions that have been found out to be defective or harmful have to be recalled.

A contact lens solution is a must have if you wear contacts. It is important though to always get the right cleaning solution for best results.
